Unusual Tales - The River's Wrath

"Unusual Tales", a series presenting Steve Ditko's comics from 1957 to 1959 that are in the public domain.

Steve Ditko's "The River's Wrath" is a 5-page story that first appeared in Charlton's OUT OF THIS WORLD #6 [1957] (the cover of which is among those featured in the new THE COVER SERIES published by Ditko and Robin Snyder). It was reprinted in SCARY TALES #46 [1984]

Another of the more dramatically written Charlton stories of the era, with the story of a sentient river taking its revenge on those who would try to contain its power.  Ditko captures the mood nicely, with that really dramatic moment of destruction in the splash panel and later in the story with the dam breaking. Very entertaining overall.

  1. Don't forget that Ditko came from Johnstown which had suffered a burst dam before he was born. Interesting that in this story nobody dies; is this the influence of the comics code, or a quirky way to counteract the fatalism that affects people after natural disasters (fatalism being anathema to an objectivist)?
